“ ‘Upon this rock I will build My church,’ Jesus said, ‘and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it.’ This location will surely test the truth of those words.”
— Blair Adams, June 19, 1973

In June 1973, in response to God’s call to reach into the “wilderness and wastelands,” Blair and Regina Adams arrived in the urban jungle of Manhattan’s Lower East Side—an area known at the time as “Hell’s Kitchen.” Regina was five months pregnant with their first child. All their earthly possessions were packed in a 4’ by 6’ U-Haul trailer. The crumbling gray tenement building on East 14th Street where both their tiny cold-water flat and their first little chapel were situated had been the home of the “Inferno Discotheque” and a crash pad for junkies. A man was murdered in the vestibule. Derelicts and prostitutes roamed the dingy streets. Who would hear the message in a place like this?

It was the unlikely beginning of a unique cultural exodus that not only radically transformed individual lives, but that then forged those lives together into an inseparable community—a community that now embodies an entire culture of life that seemed only a dream in those early years. This exodus story now spans over four decades and is reaching around the world, bringing inspiration and hope to the many spiritual wastelands of modernity.

The first in a series of books that chronicle this unfolding story, “A Motley Crew” recounts the formative first three and a half years of the journey in the words of those who were there.
